🔬What is it?
A gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss procedure. A soft silicone balloon is placed inside your stomach through your mouth (no cuts or scars) and then filled with saline. It takes up space in your stomach so you feel full faster and eat less. Think of it as a temporary tool that helps you build healthier eating habits while you lose weight.
💡Why might you need it?
The gastric balloon is ideal for people with a BMI of 27–40 who haven't achieved their weight loss goals through diet and exercise alone, or who want to avoid surgery. On average, patients lose 10–15% of their body weight. It's also used to reduce weight before surgery for safety reasons.
⚙️How does it work?
- The procedure is done under mild sedation — you'll be comfortable and relaxed
- A deflated balloon is passed through your mouth into the stomach using an endoscope (no surgery)
- Once in place, it's filled with sterile saline solution (about 400–700 ml)
- The entire procedure takes about 20–30 minutes
- The balloon stays in your stomach for 6–12 months, then is removed the same way it was placed

20–30 minutes (6–12 months in stomach)
