FIT Test (Fecal Immunochemical Test)

Gastroenterology & Laboratory

🔬What is it?

The FIT test (Fecal Immunochemical Test) is a specialized stool test that detects tiny amounts of blood in your stool that are invisible to the naked eye. It specifically identifies human hemoglobin (the protein in red blood cells), making it more accurate than older stool blood tests. It is one of the most important screening tools for colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps.

💡Why might you need it?

The FIT test is recommended for all adults aged 45 and above as a yearly colon cancer screening tool. It can detect colorectal cancer at early, curable stages. A positive FIT test does not mean you have cancer — it means further investigation (usually a colonoscopy) is needed. Early detection saves lives: colorectal cancer caught early has a 90%+ survival rate.
