FibroScan (Liver Elastography)

Hepatology & Gastroenterology

🔬What is it?

FibroScan is a quick, painless, non-invasive test that measures the stiffness of your liver using a special ultrasound-like device. Liver stiffness tells your doctor how much scarring (fibrosis) is present — without needing a liver biopsy. It also measures the amount of fat in the liver (steatosis).

💡Why might you need it?

FibroScan replaces the need for a liver biopsy in many cases — no needles, no pain, and results are immediate. It's essential for monitoring chronic liver conditions like hepatitis B/C, fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH), and alcohol-related liver disease.

⚙️How does it work?

  1. You lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head
  2. The doctor places a small probe on your skin over the liver area
  3. The device sends painless vibration pulses through the skin
  4. It measures how fast the vibrations travel — stiffer liver = faster waves = more fibrosis
  5. The entire scan takes about 10–15 minutes

⏱️Duration

10–15 minutes
